JAPE #10

Reviewed by Heath RowOpening and closing with one-page panels that may be better suited for the sex anthology
Smut Peddler, this edition of
Jape collects 24 pages of one- to four-page strips created by the long-time Michigan minicomic maven. Seemingly drawing on his sketchbook – this 2004 mini dips into 2003 - this issue combines lightly drawn gags with more heavily inked, almost Matt Madden-like pieces. The highlight - despite Bieri's clever quips about camels, mobsters, tombstones, astrology, and dreams - however, is the four-page sequence of Archaeopteryx Funnies. If he pursues this idea, Bieri could give Walter Simonson a run for his money - as well as rewrite the history of evolution. Bieri is a comics genius, and luckily, in this mini, he flexes his muscles enough to reflect his creative range. Kudos.

QUAGGA #5
by Alixopulos
($2.00 from Trevor Alixopulos / PO Box 524 / Fulton, CA / 95439 USA. Web:

Reviewed by Heath RowGiven the production values of this self-published digest – cardstock, screenprinting, and a decal (and that's just the cover) – I expected more from Trevor Alixopulos, a creator in
Legal Action Comics and
Modern Fascist Quarterly. Published in the fall of 2004, the comic features cut-and-paste, slightly awkward panel placements that would've been better suited to a square-format book. The story, "Pinhole Cinema," is a slightly disappointing Jessica Abel-meets-Ben Snakepit search for what lay "at the end of the night" in the best John Clellon Holmes sense. While Alixopulos's art features some nice Ariel Schrag, John Kerschbaum, and Jeffrey Brown moments, over all, I think Alixopulos can do better – and will. One to watch.

DJUSTINE (

Reviewed by Matt DembickiAlthough it’s published in Italian, you don’t need to know the language to get the picture (or pictures). This issue is devoted to the Italian-created S&M/porno Western character Djustine, who makes the jump from digest-size zine to a squarebound, magazine-size anthology. (Don’t worry,
Djustine writer Enrico Teodorani hasn’t sold out or gone, um, soft. The title retains its good ol’ raunchy fun.) These guy-fantasy vignettes are wonderfully and erotically illustrated and accomplish their purpose – to make you horny! Seriously, it’s hardcore porn and if that’s your pleasure, you should check out this book. It’s one of the best X-rated comics out there.
