Review by Mark Campos
David's last book was
Horse and Rider #1; since there's apparently an equine porn mag with that title, here is
Cavalcade #1, a quarter-legal landscape format booklet, cover designed '40s menu style. "This Is It" passes almost peripherally, six panels of cute animals committing suicide. But go slow and savor "The Pajama Party", in which a widower chases his grief with the help of found money, a sale on pajamas, and an accumulation of other sad folks. David has been reading his Chris Ware, but there's an older influence in his work (the busted-flat rich guy is straight out of Cliff Sterrett, for one), and the combo punch of retro style and subtle expressiveness is unstoppable. The little smile on the guy's face as he says goodnight to his new friends says it all.
