For my money there is no better digest magazine that celebrates weird old comics. What, you say
Comic Book Heaven is the
only one? Well, that's a shame. But thank goodness for Scott Saavedra just the same. Each issue of
CBH (and, really, you should get them all) is packed to the gills with fun stuff geared towards the nostalgic comics fan with a sense of humor. In this one: Scott discusses his "Comic Book Heaven: LIVE!" presentation (you may be able to catch this at Comic-Con in San Diego); a "psychedelic" comic from Harvey; a four-page comic by the editor himself (good stuff); ten things to love about early Marvels; great quotes from romance comics ("May each one of us get what she wants in life... whoever he may be!"); a couple pages of reviews; and even more, including my favorite regular feature, "Jumble" ("A Happy Pile of Random Fun!"). This issue's "Jumble" has superheroes in the bath, proof that Superman likes to be spanked, how comics made a juvenile delinquent out of Peter Jennings, and oh so much more. Really, I can't recommend this mag enough. Better get it now, though, before it goes the way of so many other great print projects – that is, the Internet. If you're prepared to give in to that reality, however, do yourself a favor and check out the
CBH website.
