Review by Rick Bradford
Everyone's had at least one unbelievably bad working environment to suffer through, right? Some people, myself included, have had several. Yet I never get tired of reading about other people's soul-crushing experiences. Maybe it's because I can identify with their situation, maybe it's because I sympathize with them or maybe, just maybe, it's because other people's horrible-job tragedies are somehow bizarrely entertaining. Whatever the case, Davida's is a doozy. Her stint at a Baltimore clothing wholesaler (which she refers to as "A People Untied") tops any bad jobs I've been through and, truly, that's saying a lot. Her story really, really makes me wish I'd kept work diaries over the years so I could write about them later. I don't want to give anything away here, either, but trust me – it's a jaw-dropper.
The job story is the longest piece in this catharsis-heavy issue but there's lots more. Davida also writes about getting her first tattoo (in New Orleans even), pays tribute to her dog who died in 2003, and offers up a recap of her life during the past year in the form of an open letter (taking the place of the journal entries for this issue).
Leeking Ink is a solid package and paints what feels like a clear picture of the author's experiences. I'm ready for the next issue!
