Tim Kelly's rubbery figures have the feel and energy of animated cartoons. There's another aspect, though, of Free Summer Franks 2 that reminded me of those weird old animated shorts from the '30s, the ones where characters might zip the flesh off their bones or fall over dead only to have their skeletons or disembodied spirits get right up and keep dancing to the oompa-loompa soundtrack. Likewise, even when disturbing topics like autism, lolita complexes, mercury poisoning and blood fetishism crop up in FSF2, Tim's goofy humor and lively art keep rolling right along. Like a downhill-bound snowball FSF2 sweeps this stuff up along with plenty of silly puns, pop culture references and "Smokey Stover"-style marginal gags into a fast-moving ball of fun. Tim gets extra points for inventing Pretzebra.
