	Monday, September 27, 2004 < comics/x > HI-HORSE OMNIBUS Vol. 1 by various ($11.95, Alternative Comics, Hi-Horse. Mature Readers) Review by Rick Bradford Howard John Arey, Andrice Arp, Joan Reilly and Bishakh Som have transformed their Hi-Horse comic book – a fine anthology series – into Hi-Horse Omnibus, an even finer anthology series and now designed to look rather smart on your bookshelf. As I've stated on numerous occasions, I'm a sucker for alternative anthologies – I just love 'em. And it certainly doesn't hurt when the line-up includes the aforementioned Hi-Horse founders, plus Martin Cendreda, Thien Pham/Jesse Reklaw, Jeff Roysdon, Zack Soto, Dan Zettwoch, J. Bradley Johnson and Gabrielle Bell, just to name a few. Although there's lots of good work in this volume, the two absolute standouts for me are the stories by Cendreda and Soto. Cendreda's "A Short Walk" is one of those pieces that celebrates the simple pleasures of life and reminds us to not take them for granted. In this case, we're treated to a walk around the protagonist's (author's?) neighborhood and he's treated to a great find while on that walk. If you enjoy the quiet work of, say, Kevin Huizenga or John Porcellino then you'll like this one. Soto's "Day 34", on the other hand, is quite a different sort of story. A fantasy that eventually turns horrific, it features a man lost at sea who comes upon a potential (yet nonsensical, at least to the reader) way out of his dilemma. The way out isn't necessarily a sensible route but at this point the man has nothing to lose. It's creepy, disturbing and the ending is distressing no matter how you look at it. In other words, I like it. There's lots more to recommend, of course, but you'll have to check it out for yourself.
