Review by Mark Campos
If you read last year's
SPX book you are already familiar with
Icecreamlandia's modus: clean line drawings of people, like lumpen-prole clip art, spouting whatever low-watt ideas cross their shallow minds – Mencken's Boobus Americanus, kitted out in the Prada-knockoff shoes and Sponge Bob hoodies of our current days. Eve and Josh[ua] know these muttonheads well, and capture them perfectly in these two stylish minis (a third is in the works and will be availabe at SPX 2004). The disgruntled corporate mascots, horny pre-teens, dumpy middle-aged shoppers and other social detritus that are found here are even more frightening because they are so plausible: people believe stupider stuff than these folks do. Each issue features a two-page centerfold of amazing cleverness; #2's is a portrait of the "Let's Make A Deal" set, a sight to make people of a certain age shudder with revulsion. Middle America – the horror!
