Review by Rick BradfordI've been enjoying this zine almost since it first began in the early '90s. It helps, of course, that I grew up on superhero comics and am still nostalgic about that stuff, as that's the primary focus. With
Comic Effect editor Jim Kingman strives to "[Emphasize] the Fun in Reading Comics," which is just fine by me.
Each issue is packed with reviews, analyses and reminiscences of mostly-mainstream comics and mostly books that aren't particularly recent. #38 features discussion of, among other subjects,
Omega the Unknown from the '70s, humor book
The Adventures of Jerry Lewis, one of those dollar-comic
Worlds Finests from the late '70s and DC's Wildcat character. Also, of particular interest to many Poopsheet readers, is a four-page examination of
The Pirates and the Mouse, Bob Levin's book about the infamous Air Pirates/Disney lawsuit. Issue 39, a special tribute to the late Julius Schwartz, is a treat for fans of Silver Age DC comics. Each writer presents his impression of either the man or the books he was responsible for (or both).
Keep your eyes peeled for a couple more theme issues coming soon, one devoted to non-superhero comics and another to apes in comics. Both of these promise to be fun reads.
