LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES SKETCHBOOKby David King
($2.00 from
David King)
Reviewed by Rick BradfordI'm sort of a sucker for (a) nostalgic tributes to comics characters and (b) unauthorized use of such characters and this zine's got it covered in both areas. Maybe you've seen David King's comics around (
Cavalcade,
Gag-Hag, etc.) but if you haven't you might consider checking him out. David works in an appealing retro style reminiscent of 1940s-'50s gag cartoons so he presents a fun treatment of these characters. What we've got here is a collection of drawings, gag panels and a fun eight-page strip in which Cosmic Boy and Lightning Boy compete for the affection of Saturn Girl. With only slight alterations this comic could've fit quite nicely in some kiddie comic of the '50s. I think this zine could be improved by, perhaps, some extreme violence or rampant debauchery, but you can't have everything. Perhaps next issue. As it is, though, it's a fun read and pretty nice to look at. For more info, and a couple of preview pages, check out David's website.
