Review by Jeff LeVineStripburger #38 is an anthology comic that comes in a box because each story has been printed in its own small, twenty-four page booklet. Thirteen artists participated, mostly from Slovenia, but also from France and even Korea. One of the nice qualities of the package is that each artist has developed their own style. Each of the thirteen books have their own feel, but if there's anything they have in common, it's a certain dreamlike approach to most of the work. Even the most narrative work,
Vladan Nikolic's "The Mute Language", presents a Serbian fairy tale. Some of the books took a more sketchbook-like approach, some are more zine-like with plenty of text, and some are essentially wordless. All the work, however, is presented in English. The best of the batch for me were
Capucine Latrasse's "Girl's Dreams" and
Choi Juhyan's "Over the River". Both have the same dream quality, and both were especially nicely illustrated in black, white, and gray. This modest collection of stories may not quite blow your mind, like the more ambitious
Kramers Ergot might, but it's fairly good as far as anthologies generally go.
